Desk note

This week the money got louder and the prices got quieter. Reinsurance capital hit a record while rates fell across almost every commercial line, with one stubborn exception: US casualty, still climbing on litigation and social inflation. When a market softens this evenly, the edge stops being price and becomes the ability to tell a good risk from a bad one.

INSURANCE AI / FUNDING

Corgi's AI insurance platform hits a $4bn valuation, its third raise in three months

FINTECH.GLOBAL · JULY 24, 2026

Corgi, a full-stack AI insurtech spanning underwriting, claims and embedded commercial products, was repriced at a $4bn valuation in a Series B extension, its third round in under three months. Earlier backers include TCV and Kindred Ventures. The raise landed even as the wider commercial market kept softening.

The Friend read

Investors are paying up for software that decides which businesses are safe to insure and at what price. That is a vote for our whole idea: whoever prices small-business risk best wins. The catch is that "we use AI" is now the cost of entry, not the prize. Our job is to make the Green, Yellow, and Red rating we put on each business visibly sharper than what a generalist can do.

A NEW RISK CLASS

Klaimee raises $5.5m to insure autonomous AI agents

FINTECH.GLOBAL · JULY 22, 2026

The Y Combinator-backed startup raised $5.5m in seed funding, led by FundersClub, to write "insurance-backed performance warranties" for AI agents. It audits autonomous systems and covers the liability gaps it says legacy Technology E&O and Cyber policies were never built to handle.

The Friend read

An AI agent is software that takes actions on its own, booking, buying, or approving things without a person clicking each time. Nobody has years of claims history for what happens when one goes wrong, so there is no old rulebook to price it. That is the purest test of our kind of intelligence: rating risk on evidence, not on decades of precedent. And a coverage line the big insurers are avoiding is exactly the sort of curated niche a capital-backed Insurco could grow into.

SMALL-BUSINESS & COMMERCIAL P&C

Casualty is the one line bucking the soft market, and only in one country

INSURANCE BUSINESS · JULY 24, 2026 · MARSH Q2 INDEX

Marsh's Q2 2026 index shows global commercial prices falling almost everywhere: property down 12%, cyber down for a twelfth straight quarter. US casualty is the exception, up 7% on claims severity, nuclear verdicts, and third-party litigation funding, while casualty rates fell in every other region.

The Friend read

Casualty insurance covers what a business owes when it hurts someone or damages their property, the lawsuit side of coverage. Prices are dropping on most things right now but rising on that one, so an insurer working off a blended average will overcharge clean businesses and undercharge risky ones. That gap between the average and the truth is exactly what we get paid to find. Pulling the genuinely safe accounts out of a scary-looking pile is the whole product.

ALTERNATIVE CAPITAL / RENEWALS

Midyear renewals: record $790bn of reinsurance capital, the steepest softening in a decade

INSURANCE JOURNAL · JULY 27, 2026

Global reinsurer capital reached a record $790bn at March 31, with non-life alternative capital up 18% to a record $135bn (Gallagher Re). The property-cat rate-on-line index is down 16% since January, and midyear demand rose more than 10%, but new supply is outpacing it.

The Friend read

Reinsurance is the insurance that insurers themselves buy to share big risks. "Alternative capital" is money from pension funds and investors backing those risks directly, instead of through a traditional insurer. There is a record pile of it right now, and it is hungry for somewhere to earn a return. That is the fuel behind Insurco, our plan to match outside money to carefully chosen small-business policies, and cheaper, deeper capital lowers what it costs us to carry risk, as long as the risks we hand it are genuinely well-picked.

THE FUNDING SIDE

Eaton Vance mutual-fund ILS holdings hit $680m, up 126% in six months

ARTEMIS · JULY 22, 2026

Eaton Vance more than doubled its insurance-linked securities holdings across three mutual funds to $680m by April 30, adding sidecar and reinsurance positions tied to Arch, PartnerRe, and QBE. The funds are already showing accrued returns on a $568m cost basis.

The Friend read

Insurance-linked securities, or ILS, let investors put money into insurance risk and collect the premium as yield, the way they might buy a bond. Now that money is showing up inside everyday mutual funds, not just specialist hedge funds. When mainstream savers are comfortable funding insurance, the pool of capital Insurco can tap gets both bigger and cheaper. The one thing that money still needs from us is a well-selected book of business to stand behind.

COMPETITORS / DISTRIBUTION

Private equity backs American Growth Insurance, an AI platform for faster brokerage growth

INSURANCE JOURNAL · JULY 20, 2026

American Growth Insurance raised nearly $70m from Rockbridge Growth Equity and Atomic for an AI operating model aimed at insurance agencies. In a year-long test with ten agencies, the company says it lifted average agency profits by more than 50%.

The Friend read

This is AI pointed at the selling and admin side of insurance, helping agencies grow faster, rather than at the harder question of which risks to take on. It is worth watching, because it shows the easy wins are going to distribution first. Our bet is the more defensible one: owning the call on which businesses get covered. Whoever decides what gets insured, not just who sells it, keeps the real margin.

Clarity is the product.
